On June 12th, Mr. Li Guoying, Minister of Water Resources, met Mr. Nurzhan Nurzhikitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, in Beijing. Both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on stepping up water cooperation.

Li Guoying pointed out that Ministry of Water Resources of China thoroughly practices President Xi Jinping’s water governance principles of “prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches and promoting government-market synergy”, and prioritizes water conservation across all domains, including influencing people’s mindset, raising public awareness and carrying out practical measures. Ministry of Water Resources is taking every effort to implement the National Action Plan for Water Conservation, and has established a robust framework of water-saving policies and regulations, to promote water-saving practice and improve efficiency in agriculture, encourage water-saving and pollutant emission reduction in industry, and implement measures to save water and reduce water loss in urban areas. Thus, all of these increasingly improve capacities for efficient water resources utilization. Nowadays, the impact of global climate change intensifies, and extreme weather events occur frequently. Both China and Kazakhstan are confronted with serious water security challenges. Ministry of Water Resources of China stands ready to further deepen water cooperation with Kazakhstan, so as to make new contributions to the development of the China-Kazakhstan permanent comprehensive strategic partnership.

Nurzhan Nurzhikitov spoke highly of China’s water achievements. He hopes to learn from China’s water governance principles and successful experience, so as to upgrade water resources management in Kazakhstan and push forward China-Kazakhstan water cooperation to a new level.
