On June 28th, 2024, Mr. Li Liangsheng, Vice Minister of Water Resources, met Ms. Hania Pérez de Cuéllar, Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation of Peru, in Beijing. Both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on China-Peru water cooperation.

Li Liangsheng pointed out that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the friendly relationship with Peru and other Latin American countries. Water authorities of two countries boast of a good foundation for cooperation and have achieved fruitful outcomes. Ministry of Water Resources of China thoroughly practices President Xi Jinping’s water governance principles of “prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches and promoting government-market synergy”, and makes remarkble achievements in the spheres of water resources management, flood control and drought relief, drinking water supply in rural areas, among others. At present, the impact of global climate change intensifies and extreme weather events occur frequently. Both China and Peru are confronted with serious water security challenges. Ministry of Water Resources of China stands ready to strengthen technical exchanges and experience sharing and deepen concrete water cooperation with Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation of Peru, so as to make new contributions to the development of the China-Peru comprehensive strategic partnership.

Hania Pérez de Cuéllar expressed her sincere wish to learn from China’s successful experience in the fields of water management system, drinking water safety in urban and rural areas, water investment and financing in rural areas, among others. Moreover, she hopes to establish an exchange and cooperation mechanism in water sector with China, thus supporting Peru in tackling water challenges, such as drinking water security.
