On July 4th, 2024, Ms. Zhu Chengqing, Vice Minister of Water Resources, met Mr. Fernando Mattos, Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, in Beijing. Both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on China-Uruguay water cooperation. Mr. Fernando Lugris, Ambassador of Uruguay to China, also joined the meeting.
Zhu Chengqing pointed out that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the friendly relationship with Uruguay. Water authorities of two countries boast of a good foundation for cooperation and have achieved fruitful outcomes. Ministry of Water Resources of China thoroughly practices President Xi Jinping’s water governance principles of “prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches and promoting government-market synergy”, so as to tackle the problems in the fields of water disasters, water resources, water ecology and water environment, and enhance the guarantee capacity of the national water security. Ministry of Water Resources of China stands ready to strengthen dialogues and exchanges with Uruguay by means of giving full play to the role of the Joint Steering Committee and jointly rolling out the 2024 training program, to promote concrete water cooperation and make new contributions to the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Uruguay.
Fernando Mattos stated that Uruguay highly emphasizes water cooperation with China, and looks forward to further stepping up it. Moreover, he expressed the willingness to learn from China’s experience in the spheres of water resources planning, water infrastructure, drought resistance, water conservation, among others, so as to expand practical cooperation and upgrade Uruguay’s water resources management in an all-round manner.
