Mr. Li Guoying, Minister of Water Resources of China, met with Bangladeshi interim government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in Beijing on March 28. Both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on scaling up water cooperation between China and Bangladesh.
Minister Li briefed measures and achievements of China’s Ministry of Water Resources in practicing President Xi Jinping’s water governance principles of “prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches and promoting government-market synergy”, promoting high-quality development in water sector and safeguarding national water security, especially successful experiences in accelerating the improvement of flood and drought disaster prevention system and responding to severe water and drought disasters, as well as significant progresses in speeding up the construction of the national water network and carrying out the overall layout of its backbones, links and nodes in a deep, detailed and pragmatic manner.
Minister Li stressed that Ministry of Water Resources of China will adhere to President Xi Jinping’s important instructions on pushing China-Bangladesh cooperation to a new level and bringing more benefits to the two peoples. He further expressed willingness to join hands with Bangladeshi water colleagues to gear up exchanges on water management philosophies and policies, as well as step up technical cooperation in the spheres of water resources planning, flood and drought prevention, agricultural irrigation, drinking water safety, among others, so as to contribute to boosting the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between China and Bangladesh.
Chief Adviser Yunus spoke highly of China’s historic achievements in water management and hoped to learn from China’s water governance concepts and successful experiences. Moreover, he expected to form an expert team from both countries to work out concrete water cooperation plans in the future, and anticipated that China will render greater support in water talent training to help Bangladesh foster water management progress in an all-round way.
