Jinping I hydropower station
Sitting in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, Jinping Hydropower Station is composed of two cascade stations. Equipped with fourteen turbines with per unit of 600,000 kW, it possesses a total installed capacity of 8.4 million kW. As a landmark project of China’s West to East Power Transmission, the project boasts of the highest arch dam and the largest hydraulic tunnel group in the world.
Jinping I hydropower station is a controlling cascade station in the lower reaches of the main stream of the Yalong River. It enjoys a controlled drainage area of 103,000 km2, accounting for 75.4% of the total catchment of the Yalong River. The construction of the project kicked off in 2005 and completed in 2013, with a total investment of approximately 24.6 billion RMB. The dam is a concrete double-curvature arch one with a height of 305 m, known as the world’s highest double-curvature arch dam. With the normal water level of 1880 m, the project boasts of a total storage capacity of 7.76 billion m3, an installed capacity of 3.6 million kW and an average annual power generation of 17.41 billion kWh. Aside from its main function of power generation, it also brings about such supplementary benefits as flood storage and sediment retention. Furthermore, the project has been playing a positive role in ecological protection in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
