Memve'ele Hydropower Station

Known as Cameroon’s version of “Three Gorges Project”, Memve'ele Hydropower Station is located on the Entem River in southern Cameroon. The station is an open-channel diversion power station, performing the main functions of power generation and flood control. With a storage capacity of 130 million m3, it mainly composes of a dam, spillways, a powerhouse, etc. The total installed capacity stands at 211,000 kW, and the average annual power generation hits 1.187 billion kWh, accounting for 20% of the total power generation in Cameroon.

The construction of Memve'ele Hydropower Station was kicked off in December 2012 and continued until its full commission in February 2018. Chinese engineering standards were widely adopted in the project. During the construction period, tens of thousands of jobs were created for local people. After completion, it has effectively alleviated the power shortage in capital Yaoundé and the southern regions. Apart from catering for the local industrial and agricultural power demands, the project also exported electricity to Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and other neighboring countries.
