The Malabo Sewage Treatment Project is situated in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea. In order to step up urban environmental sanitation and boost economic development, Equatorial Guinea commissioned China CISPDR Corporation to plan and construct the Malabo Sewage Treatment Project in 2008.

The Malabo Sewage Treatment Project consists of a sewage treatment plant and 237 km of sewage network, treating 20,000 m3 of sewage per day and serving a population of 205,000. The project adopts an improved oxidation ditch process, and the sewage is discharged into the sea after pretreatment, biological treatment and ultraviolet disinfection. With the gradual development of the project, the sewage pipes were connected to most public buildings and residents’ homes in Malabo in 2016, and the sewage system collected and treated 85% to 90% of the total sewage volume in the city. By the end of 2018, the project was officially completed and handed over to the local government.

The Malabo Sewage Treatment Project has enormously upgraded the urban sanitation and living condition of the capital city, and has been widely praised by the government and local residents of Equatorial Guinea. The incidence of malaria in Equatorial Guinea was once about 40%. Thanks to the completion of sewage treatment project, it drops to 8% at present. The Malabo Sewage Treatment Project sets a good example of urban sewage treatment in Africa.
