On September 27th, Mr. Li Guoying, Minister of Water Resources, met Madam Grace Fu Hai Yien, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore. Both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on deepening China-Singapore water cooperation.
Li Guoying pointed out that the Ministry of Water Resources of China has been actively practicing President Xi Jinping’s water governance philosophy of “prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches, and giving full play to the roles of both government and market”. A series of effective endeavors has been carried out in the spheres of water disaster prevention, water saving, water ecology rehabilitation and water environment protection, so as to render water security for the Chinese-style modernization. At present, both China and Singapore are confronted with serious water challenges due to intensifying impacts of global climate change and increasing extreme weather events. Hence, China stands ready to work with Singapore to continuously upscale exchanges and cooperation in the spheres of adaptation to climate change, development and utilization of unconventional water resources, construction of digital-twin water grid, among others.
Fu Hai Yien expressed admiration for China’s achievements in water governance, and agreed on the key areas of China-Singapore water cooperation in the future. Moreover, she expected to learn from China’s successful experience in water governance and further share Singapore’s water policies and technologies, thus promoting new achievements in water cooperation between Singapore and China.
